A refined majlis should express the owner’s approach to hospitality while offering comfortable seating, discreet service, and an appropriate degree of privacy. The most successful decisions bring these needs into the design from the beginning.
Start with your approach to hosting
Consider the usual number of guests, the occasions you host, and whether the majlis is independent or connected to other rooms. Discuss the entrance, service route, and relationship to guest facilities. In an existing space, check doors, windows, and air-conditioning locations before choosing a new layout. This establishes a practical brief before decorative selections begin.
Arrange seating for conversation
Position seats to support conversation and allow comfortable access to each place. Extra seating should not make movement around tables or entrances awkward. Try an actual seat sample to assess depth, height, and cushioning: an elegant photograph cannot tell you how a chair feels over a long visit. Confirm the layout using the furniture’s real dimensions, including side tables and occasional pieces.
Give the room a clear identity
A majlis can draw on classical proportions or contemporary restraint. Choose a principal feature, such as a carefully composed wall or chandelier, and give surrounding elements room to support it. Review upholstery, timber, stone, and metal samples together. Ask how each specified fabric and finish should be cleaned, particularly when the room will host guests frequently.
Consider lighting from a seated position
A chandelier should be part of a wider lighting discussion. Review general illumination, feature lighting, and light around the seating with the relevant specialist. Consider glare, reflections, and controls for different occasions. Test the proposed light colour against material samples before approval; lighting can change the way those colours are perceived.
Coordinate before work begins
Review furniture, curtains, lighting, and service openings together. Discuss outlet positions, maintenance access, cladding edges, and material junctions.
